It’s hard to let go of your books – if you’re a book lover. But what do you do when you’ve read them? Not reference books or the books you’ll want to re-read at some point but all the rest. Like most people with more books than shelves, I usually pass them on to friends or take them to a local charity shop. But I still have more books than I know what to do with.
Or at least I did. Thanks to GreenMetropolis, a website with a very green heart, I am now selling/recycling all those books. Like all the best ideas, the thinking behind GreenMetropolis is simple. List your unwanted books on the site, grade them according to their condition, and, if someone buys one, you receive a credit of £3 (plus postage for heavy books). GreenMetropolis encourages its members to use their credits to ‘buy’ other books listed on the site, although you can take the money and run - if you must. What’s more, they donate 5p to the Woodland Trust for every book sold.
In the past three months, I’ve sold contemporary novels, medical text books, a careers guide and books that I never thought anyone else would want to read. But someone does. In the meantime, I’ve received some excellent books, including three great novels that are now out of print and the truly fabulous A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian. And, yes, they are all going back on www.greenmetropolis.com when I’ve finished them.
So, if you love books, are short of space, and want a green solution, look no further than GreenMetropolis.
